Today was, again, a spectacularly beautiful ride and one, again, filled with pursuing canines. What is it about dogs that makes them want to chase moving things? The instinct to hunt (and kill) no doubt. In Kentucky, everyone seems to have one or two dogs, none are leashed and the animals seem to have learned how to telegraph the fact that there is approaching prey to their buddy down the road! I have gained a lot of experience in dealing with these varmints in a very short time. First, if you’re going downhill or are on the flat, you can generally outrun em. Uphill, at a crawl, presents a problem. I have learned that a stern “NO” in the lowest voice I can muster generally works. All dogs seem to understand that word. When that doesn’t work a quick kick can work but I found that it also resulted in my leaving the pavement at one point. I have yet to resort to the mace I carry. Some dog owner, all of whom are armed out here, may not take kindly to that!

Kentucky, and maybe out west in general care for their animals as just that, animals, they don’t see normal house pets as normal house pets; it is crazy to see that dogs and cats just roam around like its no big deal. I have cousins in Kentucky and have witnessed some strange things between animals and their families when I visit.
You probably didn’t have enough time while in Knoxville, but if there is ever a chance, Ijams is a beautiful nature center with some pretty nice views along the path.
